2019 Saddle Block Chardonnay
Clone 95 from Saddle Block Vineyard in SE Kelowna.
The grapes are hand harvested and whole bunch pressed, then fermented and aged in French oak barrels for 10 months, using a combination of standard barrels and puncheons. 40% goes into new oak & partial malolactic fermentation occurs.
This is a refreshing steely Chardonnay with wet stone, citrus, and rose hip on the nose. You will find flavors of slate, candied apple and almond on the palate. In its youth it is crisp and delicate.

90 points. This Chardonnay, using the same Burgundian clone 95 as its portfolio cousin from the Naramata Bench, is sourced from the winery's home vineyard in East Kelowna and offers a similar flavour profile but with a more elegant and balanced result. Here the oak treatment is subtle and lovingly structures the happy marriage of ripe orchard and melon fruit to the lively, tanginess of the citrus fruit. The finish is long and balanced. 92 points. This is the first vintage of a Clone 95 chardonnay from Spearhead's home Saddleback Vineyard in southeast Kelowna. Tasted beside a companion Clone 95 from the Duncan Vineyard in Naramata, the more northerly origin of the Saddleback is immediately obvious with its firm acidity and tension. The nose shows lifted, classic yellow apple/peach, toast, hazelnut and vague smokiness. It is medium-full bodied, firm and intense with excellent focus and length. Tasted Sept 2021. ~ David Lawrason - Wine Align
90 points. Medium intense nose and palate of yellow apple and tropical fruit with a juicy attractive acidity and texture. Well balanced with a long finish. Tasted blind October 2021. ~ Janet Dorozynski, DipWSET/PhD - Wine Align
