Winemaking

The grapes for this unique wine are 100% Pommard. Harvested by hand, undergoes fermentation following a 6-day maceration period. Following spontaneous fermentation, the wine is moved to French oak barrels to mature for 13 months (25% new).

Tasting Notes

On the nose, it showcases a complex bouquet of dark fruit, such as black currant and dark cherry, along with notes of Iris, Allspice, and tobacco leaf. The palate is robust, with fine tannins beautifully balanced with the acidity and flavour intensity. The fruit characteristics persist on the palate, along with coffee, sweet spice, and potting soil. The wine is both floral and earthy, very Burgundian in style.

Pair with sharp cheddar, dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher), roast duck.

Reviews

94 points. A bit of aromatic restraint from a pinot noir keeping some secrets and what scents as some whole bunch percentage inclusive style. Good palate richness and berry to citrus emulsion like a fluid smoothie of reds, greens and acidity. Plenty of understated depth, so ample, focused and really well defined. Brightest of the flight, red fruit in flight, breathing easier, acids also up there and structure never too demanding. Could always drink a glass. Drink 2024-2026. Tasted blind at NWACS June 2024. ~ Michael Godel, WineAlign

92 points. This very limited edition pinot noir represents winemaker Grant Stanley's next phase of exploration into his favourite grape variety. It is from a single clone - Pommard - named for the Burgundy village from which it emanates. I hesitate to do a deep dive into clones, and what this should mean to you the consumer - because I have not yet come to grips sensorially with what each of the many clones offer. And because most pinots are composites of several clones. I am more interested in the fact this is from a single Summerland vineyard which is displaying a 'cooler side of the lake' tension and nervosity that is overlayed by quite intense, juicy sour cherry, perhaps due to the clone. But there is also subtle herbal/tobacco and forest floor, plus subtle cinnamon barrel spice. It is light to medium bodied, juicy and intense with some alcohol heat and tannin. Excellent intensity. It is above all engaging. And I would like to follow this over the next few years. Tasted June 2024. ~ David Lawrason, WineAlign
