SpearHead Orchard Block Riesling (planted 2016) in South East Kelowna

Winemaking

Hand harvested on November 15th. Foot stomped in picking bins for skin contact and to free the sugar from the dehydrated raisins. Fermented cold in stainless steel and neutral French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes

Bright light gold colour. Well packed aromas of ripe citrus and tropical fruit with layers of apricot marmalade and honey nectar. The palate mirrors the nose with a smooth rich and unctuous mouthfeel. A fine line of acidity provides tension and energy. Drink now or cellar for 8 to 10 years.

Reviews

92 points. As far as late harvest and riesling are concerned this really hits the spot. Quite sweet (as per the 31.5 brix number at harvest) that translates to 133 g/L of residual sugar but it is more than just acidity that keeps this balanced. It’s almost as if the neutral oak has created a low and slow bake-effect to render the fat, emulsify the parts and turn out this spiced clafouti of apple, nectarine, guava, mango and sweet lime. Honeyed finish makes it all worthwhile. Drink 2021-2027. Tasted January 2021.

91 points. Sweet and flavourful (133 grams of residual sugar), spearhead's 2019 botrytis affected riesling is a broad and fleshy, citrus and stone-fruit flavoured example, with balancing acids and very good length. The botrytis is very clean, concentrating rather than altering flavours, indeed, almost more like a late harvest/dried grape example. Impeccable balance, fine length, good value in the genre. Tasted January 2021.

89 points. This late harvest riesling comes off young vines in Orchard Block Vineyard, planted in 2016 in South East Kelowna. The fruit was picked by hand at 31.5 Brix, and stomped in picking bins to get some skin contact and release the sugar from the dehydrated raisinated fruit. It was fermented cold in stainless steel and neutral French oak barrels. The colour is light, and the wine is reasonably light on the palate despite a large amount of residual sugar led by aromas of ripe red apples, apricots, citrus, and honey. Smooth and rich, it has an unctuous mouthfeel reminiscent of a German Auslese level riesling. Creamy but never cloying, think crème brûlée or Tarte Tatin.

89 points. This is a rare botrytis-affected riesling from Spearhead's vineyard in East Kelowna. It is not as concentrated or rich as I expected. It certainly shows peach-apricot fruit, some florality and that vague sense of botrytis mold/earth, but there is not a lot of other complexity. It is medium sweet with fine, firming acidity, low alcohol (11%) and very good flavour focus and length. A touch lemony on the finish as well. Tasted January 2021.
